The Sergeant is a first-line supervisor that typically answers to and works under the leadership of a Lieutenant. The Sergeant is responsible for managing a work group ensuring compliance with department policies and procedures while adhering to statutory obligations and case law for criminal and non-criminal cases. Sergeants are expected to have an understanding of modern principles, methods, and procedures of law enforcement supervision and organization, and have a strong understanding of supervisory span of control, leadership, and group dynamics. Sergeants must be able to perform all the duties of a Patrol Deputy, as well as supervise, coordinate, and guide Sheriff’s Office employees in their daily activities.
